The Sorbian Linden Leaf

The serbske lipowe łopjenko | łopješko” (Sorbian Linden Leaf) is one of the most recognisable symbols of the Sorbs, representing identity, solidarity, and the visibility of Sorbian language and culture.

The idea for the modern symbol originated at the Domowina headquarters. Its graphic design was developed by the artist Isa Brützke. The symbol was first used publicly at the Sorbian Gathering held in Raddusch/Raduš in 1994.

Since then, the Linden Leaf has been used in a wide range of contexts, particularly in cultural public relations work, as well as at events, projects and initiatives organised by Sorbs. It appears in publications, information materials and at cultural and sporting events, including the EUROPEADA, the football tournament for autochthonous national minorities organised by the Federal Union of European Nationalities.

Today, the Sorbian Linden Leaf is intentionally conceived as an open symbol that can and should be used by the Sorbian population and its associations. It serves to increase the visibility of the Sorbian language and culture in public life and is intended as a shared symbol of identification. Domowina expressly aims for the symbol to be widely embraced by the Sorbian population and used both in everyday life and in cultural activities.
