Heritage of Lusatia

The project UNESCO 5 – Heritage of Lusatia connects the UNESCO sites of the region with the intangible cultural heritage of the Sorbs and presents Lusatia as a diverse shared heritage of Europe.

Lusatia is home to four UNESCO-protected sites: the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve, the Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape, the Muskauer Arch Global Geopark, and Muskau Park World Heritage Site. Together with the festivals and customs of the Lusatian Sorbs throughout the year, which feature on the list of intangible cultural heritage of the Federal Republic of Germany, this forms a uniquely concentrated cluster of UNESCO-designated landscapes found nowhere else in the world.

Since 2023, these heritage sites have been working together and contributing in their own way to the structural transformation of Lusatia. Under the project title UNESCO 5 – Heritage of Lusatia, the five partners pool their strengths by developing educational programmes, themed cycling tours and school projects. These activities not only highlight the beauty and significance of the region, but also convey its history.
