Serbski Sokoł

The association Serbski Sokoł z.t. is the umbrella organisation of Sorbian sports clubs and individual members, as well as of all other sports clubs that support the aims of Serbski Sokoł z.t.

From 1920 to 1933, the Sorbian sports association Serbski Sokoł was active in Lusatia. Its objective was not only to encourage Sorbian children, young people and adults to engage in sporting activities, but also to contribute to strengthening national consciousness.

The umbrella organisation integrates individual members as well as sports clubs, sports associations and sports groups as corporate members who feel connected to the Sokoł movement. In addition to numerous individual members, the following sports clubs and associations have joined Serbski Sokoł z.t.: Sokoł Budyšin z.t.; the footballers of Grün-Weiß Hórka | Grün-Weiß Horka and SG Njebjelčicy | SG Nebelschütz; the football teams of DJK Sokoł Ralbicy–Hórka | Ralbitz–Horka; the volleyball teams of the Serbski gymnazij Budyšin | Sorbian Grammar School Bautzen and Chośebuz | Cottbus; and the volleyball team of the teachers of the Serbska šula “Michał Hórnik” Worklecy | Sorbian School “Michał Hórnik” Räckelwitz, among others.

In character, the umbrella organisation is committed to grassroots and recreational sport. The main objective of the association is to initiate, coordinate, organise and implement sporting events in Lusatia, in particular in the districts of Budyšin | Bautzen and Kamjenc | Kamenz.

Serbski Sokoł z.t. also maintains contacts with athletes of the international Sokoł movement. All events primarily serve the development, deepening and preservation of regional identity, in which the Sorbian language constitutes the central element.

In 1996, Serbski Sokoł z.t. joined Domowina – Zwězk Łužyskich Serbow | Zwjazk Łužiskich Serbow | Bund Lausitzer Sorben, the umbrella organisation of Sorbian associations in Upper and Lower Lusatia.

Following the political changes, the re-establishment of Serbski Sokoł was repeatedly proposed in Sorbian media and at public events. The founding assembly took place on 28 December 1993 in Hórka | Horka, district of Kamjenc | Kamenz. Georg Frenzel, Honorary President of DJK Sokoł Ralbicy–Hórka | Ralbitz–Horka and a former member of the earlier Serbski Sokoł, was elected Honorary Chairman of Serbski Sokoł z.t.
