What is Domowina?
Domowina is the umbrella organisation of the Lusatian Sorbs. The Sorbs are a small people in Germany. They live in Lusatia.
Lusatia is in the federal states of Saxony and Brandenburg.
The Sorbs have their own language and culture. The language is called Sorbian. There are two forms of the language:
Upper Sorbian
Lower Sorbian
Domowina works for the Sorbian language, culture and the rights of the Sorbs. It is the voice of the Sorbs in Lusatia.
Domowina was founded in 1912.
Domowina brings together around 200 groups and associations. They have about 7,600 members. Together they work for the Sorbs in Saxony and Brandenburg.
Lusatia is our home. We want an open region with many languages and cultures. We work for the protection of minorities in Europe. We feel connected with many small peoples in Europe.
The main office of Domowina is in the House of the Sorbs in Bautzen. Another office is in the Wendish House in Cottbus.
The general assembly meets every two years. The federal board decides on the work. The presidium prepares the decisions.
The office supports the associations. It carries out the decisions.
Domowina works in many regions of Lusatia. For this there are offices in eight places.

Domowina works for its members and for the Sorbian people. Domowina supports Sorbian associations and organisations.
It helps with projects and events. For example, it supports large gatherings such as the Europeada or the International Folklore Festival Lusatia.
The Folklore Festival takes place every two years.

Our tasks
Rights and political representation Domowina protects the rights of the Sorbs. These rights are written in laws in Saxony and Brandenburg. Domowina speaks with politicians. It informs people about the Sorbs. It works together with other minorities.
Protection of the Sorbian language The Sorbian language is an important heritage. We help families to speak Sorbian. We support the language in nurseries and schools. We create new places for the language.
Culture and community Culture, sport, art and science are important. They show Sorbian culture to the outside world. We support associations and joint projects. We support exchange with other countries. Religious traditions are part of Sorbian culture. Church communities are places for language and community.
Lusatia as a homeland Lusatia is the homeland of the Sorbs. We strengthen language and culture there. The economy is important for the region. Two languages are an advantage for Lusatia. Lignite mining has changed the region.
This is the Domowina House in Hoyerswerda. Regional representatives and staff of Domowina work here. The regional association Handrij Zejler also has its offices here. Domowina was founded in Hoyerswerda in 1912.
Domowina and members
Domowina has many members. They come from culture, science, education, youth, religion and sport. They work together for the future of the Sorbs.
Regional associations Domowina is the umbrella organisation of the Sorbs. There are five regional associations. The associations work in five regions. The five regions are called Schleife, Hoyerswerda, Bautzen, Kamenz and Lower Lusatia. These associations bring together the local associations in their regions. They strengthen Sorbian identity.

These associations bring together the local associations in their regions. They strengthen Sorbian identity.
Our associations There are many professional associations. They work in science, education, art, youth, tourism, culture, music, folk art, religion and sport. They show the diversity of Domowina. They support the Sorbian language and culture.
The oldest association is called Maćica Serbska. It connects science, history, language and culture. The Cyril and Methodius Association works in the field of religion. The Sorbian Youth Association Pawk works with young people. Sorbischer Kulturtourismus e. V. promotes tourism in Lusatia.
Other associations are the Association of Sorbian Choirs, the Association of Sorbian Craftspeople and Entrepreneurs, Serbski Sokoł e.V., the Society for the Support of the Sorbian National Ensemble, the Sorbian Culture and Information Centre in Berlin SKI e. V., and the Association of Sorbian Students.
The picture shows the general assembly of Domowina in 2025 in Bautzen. Many members of Domowina are in the hall. They vote on decisions. To do this, they hold up cards with “Yes” or “No” in Sorbian.
Become a member
Here you can learn how to become a member. Domowina accepts Sorbian associations and individuals. You can become a member if you like the Sorbian language and culture. You become part of a network of people who support them.
You can become a member if you are in a Sorbian association. Your association can also become a member. Friends of the Sorbs can also become members.
