The Domowina Regional Association “Michał Hórnik” Kamjenc | Kamenz benefits from a distinctive situation: in the municipalities of Chrósćicy | Crostwitz, Njebjelčicy | Nebelschütz, Pančicy-Kukow | Panschwitz-Kuckau, Ralbicy-Róžant | Ralbitz-Rosenthal and Worklecy | Räckelwitz, which are predominantly Catholic, more than 50% of the population are Sorbs. This facilitates the preservation and continuation of the Sorbian language and culture, which in this region are deeply rooted in the close connection between religion and national identity.
The growing number of women wearing traditional costume at festivals and weddings reflects a strengthened awareness of their own identity.
Founded on 24 July 1921 and named after Michał Hórnik, an important patron of Sorbian literature, the association brings together four local groups and 21 cultural associations. With more than 1,000 members in the Sorbian core settlement area, the Regional Association actively contributes to the preservation and further development of Sorbian identity. Numerous events foster a sense of togetherness and reflect the region’s cultural diversity – ranging from traditional folklore to contemporary music projects and rock bands.
The Catholic faith plays a key role in maintaining the Sorbian language in the region. Almost all church services are also held in Sorbian, providing the church with an important space for sustaining the language. Schools in the region are equally crucial: safeguarding Sorbian school locations is a fundamental prerequisite for the survival of the Sorbian people.
