ZARI – Network for the Sorbian Language and Regional Identity
The Network for the Sorbian Language and Regional Identity is committed to counteracting language loss and responding to regional needs. It strengthens existing spaces for the use of the language, creates new places of encounter, promotes creative, artistic and civic engagement, and connects key contact points within the region. Its long-term goal is the revitalisation of the Sorbian language.
The Domowina is the responsible body for the project ZARI – Network for the Sorbian Language and Regional Identity.
Project ZARI – Network for the Sorbian Language and Regional Identity aims to revitalise the Sorbian language and strengthen cultural engagement. Across Lusatia, Sorbian will once again become more visible and audible.
Our goal is 100,000 active Sorbian speakers by the year 2100. Through new and creative formats, the Sorbian language is being brought closer to people in all regions of Upper Lusatia. We support everyone who wishes to expand their skills and knowledge in order to strengthen their voluntary engagement.
Project management coordinates all processes of the project. Key pillars of its work include developing the project plan, allocating staff for the implementation of project tasks, assuming primary responsibility for financial management and coordinating public relations activities. Another central responsibility is the continuous monitoring of work progress to ensure compliance with the project plan and the quality of the project outcomes.

Language Education
In the field of language education, new formats for language learning are developed and implemented. This project focuses particularly on adults who wish to learn Sorbian. Tasks include developing course content and conducting intensive programs. Language is an important key to opening up new paths of knowledge for adult learners. Through a variety of measures, we also aim to anchor Sorbian more firmly into everyday life.

Language Motivators
Language Motivators support Sorbian life in the regions and advise local stakeholders. They are active in areas where the Sorbian language has not yet been revitalised in everyday use. Their main tasks are to strengthen regional identity, preserve and expand spaces for the use of the language, and gradually build networks among people interested in the Sorbian language and culture.

Cultural Management
Cultural managers are responsible for various fields such as museums, local heritage collections, music and dance, theatre and film, as well as folk art, crafts and sports. They serve especially as contacts and companions for volunteer associations and groups. In addition, cultural managers promote the creation of networks between voluntary actors and cultural institutions.

Language Research
There are many measures that promote language, but there is no universal recipe for revitalization. Who speaks Sorbian with whom and in what situation, and why or why not, differs from region to region. Through language research, we create the foundation for revitalization adapted to people’s needs and therefore successful.
The project is funded by the Foundation for the Sorbian People with funds from the Federal Ministry of the Interior based on a Bundestag resolution.
