Lausitz Monitor Survey

The Lausitz Monitor reveals what matters to people in Lusatia and how they view the future of their region. The latest findings highlight the growing importance of Sorbian language and culture for identity, social cohesion and Lusatia’s shared sense of place

The Lausitz (Lusatia) Monitor provides a current and unique insight into public opinion across the region, revealing what matters most to the people who live there. The 2025 survey places particular emphasis on one topic: the Sorbs and their significance for the identity and future of Lusatia.

As a representative long-term study, the Lusatia Monitor examines public attitudes in Brandenburg and Saxony each year towards structural change, quality of life and regional development. The survey is conducted and supported by MAS Partners and a team of process psychologists, providing valuable insights into social developments across Lusatia.

The latest findings clearly show that questions of cultural identity are becoming increasingly important and that Sorbian culture is gaining greater visibility in public awareness.

Several key findings illustrate this trend:

  • 83% of respondents regard Sorbian culture as an essential part of Lusatia, while around 72% consider bilingualism to be an equally important characteristic of the region.
  • People of Sorbian heritage demonstrate a particularly strong attachment to Lusatia: 83% say that the region is close to their hearts – significantly higher than the population average.
  • The survey also highlights the unifying power of cultural symbols: almost half of Lusatia’s residents can imagine using “Witaj” as an everyday regional greeting, comparable to “Moin” in northern Germany.

These findings reflect a broader trend revealed by the survey: the Sorbian language and culture are increasingly seen not only as a heritage worth preserving, but also as a unifying element for the region as a whole. The study further indicates that the Sorbs are increasingly understood as an integral part of Lusatia, playing an important role in shaping a shared regional identity.
