Der sogenannte „burger eydt wendisch“ zählt bekanntermaßen zu den ältesten sorbischen Schrift- und Sprachdenkmälern. Weniger Aufmerksamkeit als der populäre Text erregte indes das Bautzener Stadtbuch, das den Bürgereid enthält. Das kompakte Sammelbändchen, das verschiedenartige Schriftstücke aus dem 15. und 16. Jahrhundert vereinigt, wurde von einem Stadtschreiber zusammengestellt, der wiederholt als Kompilator tätig wurde und weitere Spuren innerhalb der städtischen Archivbestände hinterließ. Neben Inhalt, innerer Struktur und Überlieferungskontext wird auch die wechselvolle Provenienzgeschichte des kleinen Stadtbuchs näher beleuchtet.
