Maćica Awards

At its general assembly on 10 April 2010, the Sorbian scholarly society Maćica Serbska decided to award prizes for early-career scholars in order to promote the use of the Sorbian (Wendish) language and engagement with Sorbian (Wendish) history, culture and folklore studies.

Maćica Serbska awards the following early-career prizes every two years. The next call for applications will take place in 2027.

Bogumił Šwjela Prize

The Bogumił Šwjela Prize is awarded to pupils of the Lower Sorbian Grammar School in Cottbus and to pupils of grammar schools in Lower Lusatia for work in the fields of Sorbian language, literature, sociology, pedagogy/didactics, history, art, journalism or Sorbian cultural studies.

Michał Hórnik Prize

The Michał Hórnik Prize is awarded to pupils of the Sorbian Grammar School in Bautzen and other grammar schools in Upper Lusatia for work in the fields of Sorbian language, literature, sociology, pedagogy/didactics, history, art, journalism or Sorbian cultural studies.

Arnošt Muka Prize

The Arnošt Muka Prize is awarded to students as well as to graduates in their first year after completing their studies for work in the fields of Sorbian language, literature, sociology, pedagogy/didactics, history, art, journalism or Sorbian cultural studies.

Funding Notice

The Maćica Awards for the years 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017 were supported by the Foundation for the Sorbian People, which receives annual funding from public funds on the basis of the approved budgets of the German Bundestag, the Brandenburg State Parliament and the Saxon State Parliament.
