175 Years of Maćica Serbska

On the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Sorbian scholarly society, Maćica Serbska, together with the Sorbian Institute, invited participants to a conference entitled “Creating Knowledge: The Work of Maćica Serbska / Maśica Serbska in the 20th and 21st Centuries”. The conference took place on 25–26 November 2022 at the House of the Sorbs in Bautzen. The Chair of Maćica Serbska, Dr Anja Pohontsch, welcomed the guests to the interdisciplinary conference, at which speakers from Germany and abroad contributed a total of 15 papers.

The focus of the conference was on the activities of Maćica Serbska following its revival in 1990/91. Particular emphasis was placed on the colloquia organised by the History Section in the 1990s, which contributed to a critical re-examination of previous Sorbian historiography and opened up new perspectives. Other groups within Maćica Serbska, including the Language Commissions and the Folklore and Museum Studies Section, were also highlighted for their continued active work up to the present day.

In the final session of the conference, participants discussed future challenges. It became clear that Maćica Serbska should reflect on expanding and sharpening its profile in order to attract active younger generations in the future. The discussion on the future direction of Maćica’s work is to be continued.

In total, around 40 interested participants took part. The publication of the conference contributions in the Kleine Reihe (Small Series) of the Sorbian Institute is planned.
