Competition for Adults

Call for the Competition for the Most Beautiful Sorbian Easter Egg for Adults 2026

The Society for Promoting the Sorbian National Culture invites all adults in Lusatia who feel connected to this beautiful tradition and wish to contribute to its preservation to take part in our competition.

Collections (three blown-out hen’s eggs) created using traditional tools in the recognised Sorbian techniques will be awarded prizes:

  • Wax batik technique – single-colour and multi-colour
  • Scratching technique
  • Etching technique
  • Wax relief technique – single-colour and multi-colour

Each participant may enter the competition in more than one technique.

Design your Sorbian Easter eggs by creatively varying the rich traditional repertoire of forms, for example:

  • geometric shapes applied with a quill, such as triangles, squares and circles, or with a needle using dots, lines and radiating patterns
  • naturalistic and stylised motifs such as blossoms, tendrils and leaves (e.g. willow catkins), or animals such as birds
  • symbols such as hearts, crosses, the Easter lamb, and inscriptions such as “Wjesołe jutry – Happy Easter”.

The closing date for entries is 18 February 2026 (date of postmark).

You may submit your collections at the following locations:

  • at the Sorbian Cultural Information Centre, 02625 Bautzen, Postplatz 2
  • at the Sorbian Cultural Information Centre “Lodka”, 03046 Cottbus, August-Bebel-Straße 82

    • 02977 Hoyerswerda, Dresdener Straße 18

For postal submissions, please use the following address:

To participate, please enclose a sheet with your name, full address, age, telephone number, email address and the technique used.

By submitting collections to the competition, participants consent to the publication of photographs of the winning collections, as well as to the publication of their name, place of residence and age in connection with the competition results. If you do not wish to give this consent, please send an email to info@sorbische-volkskultur.de

An expert jury will determine the prize winners in the individual techniques. First to third prizes are funded by the Foundation for the Sorbian People. Additional prizes are provided by the Society for Promoting the Sorbian National Culture. Legal recourse is excluded.

The award ceremony for the competition winners will take place on Friday, 27 February 2026, at 5.00 p.m. at the Sorbian Cultural Information Centre in Bautzen.

A separate competition is organised for children and young people.
