Regional Highlights – Experiencing Sorbian Culture

The preservation of Sorbian customs in nurseries and schools forms a strong foundation for the region’s cultural diversity. For decades, choirs, dance and theatre groups, as well as brass bands, have shaped cultural life and brought both traditional and contemporary Sorbian projects to the public at a high level of quality.

Sorbian Folk Art Groups – Tradition and Community

Professional artists and ensembles, such as the Sorbian National Ensemble and the German-Sorbian People’s Theatre, are now indispensable pillars of Sorbian cultural life. Nevertheless, folk art groups also play an important role in preserving and passing on Sorbian culture and traditions.

In the region, these include:

  • Choir “Meja” Radwor | Radibor – founded in 1896, one of the oldest amateur choirs with a strong connection to the Catholic Sorbian tradition.
  • Choir “Budyšin” | Bautzen – founded in 1964, an important cultural ambassador for the Sorbian people.
  • The 1st Sorbian Cultural Brigade of the Sorbian Grammar School Budyšin | Bautzen, established in 1949, brings young people together through music and dance. It includes:
    • a choir dedicated to Sorbian songs and traditions
    • a dance group that performs in traditional costume and presents traditional dances

The folk art groups make a valuable contribution to the cultural identity of the Sorbian people and strengthen community life within the region.
