Language and education

The Sorbian language is the central feature of the Sorbian people's identity. Preserving and passing on this language is essential for keeping Sorbian culture alive, and it is given a great deal of attention on a daily basis.

Early childhood education

Bilingual education

The Sorbian language is the central feature of the Sorbian people's identity. Great attention is paid every day to preserving and nurturing the living Sorbian language and culture.
Domowina plays an influential role in bilingualism and many other issues affecting the Sorbs.

The use of the Sorbian language has declined noticeably in everyday life. The exception to this are the villages around Wittichenau, which are predominantly Catholic. That is why the regional association is committed to promoting the learning of the Sorbian language. In 2008, Protestant pastor Joachim Nagel launched the Sorbian heritage festival Heimattage, which has since been celebrated annually in a different village and in Sorbian colours. For many younger people, it has become a matter of course to wear traditional costume at these events.

The regional association also introduces children and young people to the Sorbian language and culture through various projects.

Early childhood education with the Witaj model

Witaj means welcome – all children are welcome, whether they come from Sorbian, German or mixed-language families.
The following daycare centres in the region offer children the opportunity to learn the Sorbian language immersively from an early age using the Witaj model:

  • Kindertagesstätte „Lutki“, Halštrowska Hola | Elsterheide, OT Hory | Bergen (Website)
  • Kindertagesstätte „Waldsee“, Wojerecy | Hoyerswerda OT Brětnja/Michałki | Bröthen/Michalken (Website)
  • WITAJ-Kindertagesstätte „Pumpot“, Wojerecy | Hoyerswerda OT Němcy | Dörgenhausen (Website)
  • Kindertagesstätte „Krabat“, Wojerecy | Hoyerswerda OT Čorny Chołmc | Schwarzkollm (Website)
  • Kindertagesstätte Kulow | Wittichenau (Website)

Bilingual education in schools in the region

A key advantage is that Sorbian-language education can be seamlessly continued from nursery school through to schools in the region.
This is possible at the following schools:

  • Grundschule „Handrij Zejler“ Wojerecy | Hoyerswerda (Website)
  • Krabat - Grundschule Kulow | Wittichenau (Website
  • Oberschule „Korla August Kocor" Kulow | Wittichenau (Website)
  • Lessinggymnasium in Wojerecy | Hoyerswerda wird sorbische Sprache in Arbeitsgemeinschaften angeboten (Website
  • Johanneum in Wojerecy | Hoyerswerda wird sorbische Sprache in Arbeitsgemeinschaften angeboten (Website

In addition, the Domowina regional association in Wojerecy | Hoyerswerda has taken on sponsorship of the Handrij Zejler Primary School and provides additional support to pupils through extracurricular Sorbian projects.

The secondary school in Wojerecy | Hoyerswerda, which opened on 30 August 2020, does not yet offer Sorbian lessons. Domowina and the city's advisory board for Sorbian affairs are working together with the state of Saxony and the State Office for Schools and Education (LaSuB) to find a solution. In addition, Sorbian history and culture are to be included in the secondary school's all-day programme.
