Sights in the region

The Wojerecy | Hoyerswerda region is rich in places that keep German-Sorbian history alive. Museums, historic farms and cultural institutions tell of tradition, craftsmanship and identity – and make the cultural heritage of the region visible and tangible.

  • The Sorbian fountain on the market square in Hoyerswerda
    This is intended to remind us that the Sorbian people shaped Upper and Lower Lusatia for many centuries. In the seventh, eighth and ninth centuries, they were the only inhabitants of this area. 

Dom Zejlerja a Smolerja | Zejler-Smoler House

The association-run Zejler-Smoler House in Łaz | Lohsa was founded in the late 1990s and is a place of cultural exchange. Exhibitions are dedicated to the life and work of the poet Handrij Zejler and the writer Jan Arnošt Smoler, as well as other Lohsa personalities such as Pastor Jurij Malink, folk poet Agnes Buder and composer Jan Paul Nagel. 

The ‘Begegnungsstätte Zejler-Smoler-Haus Lohsa e.V.’ association organises monthly events such as lectures, book readings, exhibitions and concerts.

Domizniska stwa Brětnja | Local History Museum Bröthen

The local history museum in the Bröthen community centre showcases the village's history and the Sorbian culture of the region. The exhibition, which was redesigned in 2021, presents historical everyday objects, documents and insights into rural life. The room also serves as a meeting place for smaller events, gatherings and club meetings.

Dom za serbske narodne drasty Wojerecy | Trachtenhaus Jatzwauk in Hoyerswerda

The Trachtenhaus Jatzwauk is a traditional centre dedicated to the preservation and presentation of Sorbian costume culture. In addition to a historic costume tailoring workshop, it houses exhibitions on Sorbian traditional dress and the craft of indigo block printing, as well as a small shop offering fabrics, accessories and regional handicrafts.

Kładźita bróžnja Patokec w Halštrowskej Holi / Horach | Schrotholzscheune Pattoka in Elsterheide / Bergen

Here you can discover fascinating insights into Sorbian ways of working and living, as well as customs and legends. In the more than 250-year-old timber-framed barn, you will find changing exhibitions and a workshop where Birgit Pattoka refines glass and porcelain and sells her creations on site.

Ćiskowski statok w Ćisku | Zeißighof in Zeißig

The Zeißighof, a Sorbian farmstead dating from the late 19th century, has been a cultural and activity centre in Zeißig for over ten years. Following its restoration in 2006/07, it invites visitors to experience Sorbian life and rural craftsmanship in an authentic setting – including original living quarters preserved from the mid-20th century.

Muzej jutrownych jejkow Zabrod w Halštrowskej Holi / Zabrod | Easter Egg Museum Sabrodt in Elsterheide / Sabrodt

The museum, located in a former four-sided farmstead in Sabrodt, displays intricately decorated Easter eggs from Lusatia and around the world, as well as objects and customs connected with the egg. It is run by the Lausitzer Heimatverein e.V. In addition to the exhibition, the museum offers workshops, guided tours and traditional events such as an Easter egg fair.
