Der sorbische Volkskundler dr. Arnošt Muka | Dr. Ernst Mucke beschreibt in seiner “Statistik der Oberlausitzer Sorben des Königreiches Preußen” aus dem Jahre 1885 diese Kirche folgendermaßen: “Die Hoyerswerdaer Kirche besaßen bis zum Jahre 1835 nur die Sorben, die Deutschen aus der Stadt hatten unter ihrem Turm auf der Westseite einen Kirchenanbau mit Vorbauten nach Süden und Norden. Diese deutsche Kapelle wurde 1835 wegen Baufälligkeit von der Obrigkeit geschlossen und später abgetragen. Die sorbische Gemeinde nahm die deutsche gastlich auf und seit dieser Zeit halten beide ihren Gottesdienst in der sorbischen, der sorbischen Gemeinde gehörenden Kirche.” Und weiter: “Gepredigt wird den Sorben sorbisch und den Deutschen deutsch, die Sorben gehen zum sorbischen Abendmahl. Die Messe ist stets zuerst um 8 Uhr deutsch und um 10 Uhr sorbisch. Geistliche sind dort ... immer 3 gewesen, der Primarius, der Archidiakon und der Diakon ...; alle drei mussten Sorben oder der sorbischen Sprache mächtig sein.”

Die Übersetzung ist bezüglich des Wortes “Messe” falsch, da im obersorbischen Original das Wort “kemš” für Gottesdienst verwendet wird, zumal man im evangelischen Raum nicht von Messe, sondern von Gottesdienst spricht. Die Formulierung, dass die Hoyerswerdaer Kirche bis 1835 nur die Sorben “besaßen” ist nicht so zu deuten, dass das sorbische Volk diese besaß, sondern die hiesige sorbische (wendische) Kirchengemeinde. Dies kommt auch im weiterführenden Text des Zitates so zum Ausdruck.
Die Stadtkirche (auch “Wendische Kirche”), deren Ursprünge bis ins 14. Jahrhundert reichen, ist seit 1540 eine evangelische Kirche. Die sorbische (damalige Bezeichnung: wendische) Gemeinde war wesentlich größer als die deutsche. Man kann sagen, dass die Stadtkirche das erste öffentliche Gebäude mit sorbischer Zweckbestimmung in der Stadt darstellte. Bis 1850 stand vor der “Wendischen Kirche” eine kleine deutsche Kapelle, die wahrscheinlich um 1700 erbaut worden ist. Seit 1834 wegen Baufälligkeit gesperrt wurde sie 1850 abgerissen. Seither nutzen Sorben und Deutsche die Kirche gemeinsam. Wie auch in den anderen sorbischen Stadtkirchen in beiden Lausitzen wurde hier Gottes Wort den Sorben bis zum Jahre 1933 jeden Sonntag in ihrer Muttersprache gepredigt. Die sorbische Sprache war seitens der Kirche und der Obrigkeit bei der Religionsausübung anerkannt. In der preußischen Oberlausitz forcierten aber die Schule und die Kirche auf Verlangen des Staates ab dem 19. Jahrhundert die Germanisierung der Sorben. Zum Beispiel wurde der sorbische Konfirmandenunterricht im Jahre 1885 verboten. In der Nazizeit wurden die sorbischen Gottesdienste reduziert. Nach dem Krieg fanden die sorbischen Gottesdienste wieder regelmäßig zweimal im Monat statt. Wegen des zunehmenden Sprachwandels sank die Zahl der Teilnehmer am sorbischen Gottesdienst. Im Jahre 1973 fiel erstmals ein sorbischer Gottesdienst aus, weil keiner kam.
In dieser Kirche wurde am 17. Oktober 1843 auf Initiative des Lohsaer sorbischen Pfarrers Handrij Zejler (1804-1872) der sorbische evangelische Missionsverein für das Hoyerswerdaer Gebiet gegründet. Dieser war der erste sorbische Verein in Hoyerswerda und initiierte mit der Herausgabe seiner sorbischsprachigen Missionsnachrichten (1844-1849) den Beginn des sorbischen Buchdrucks in Hoyerswerda. Die 1842 gegründete Druckerei Ihring beschaffte sich hierzu sorbische Drucktypen.
Der sorbische Missionsverein organisierte deutsch-sorbische Missionsfeste reihum in den Kirchgemeinden, so 1844 erstmals in Hoyerswerda, später zum Beispiel auch in Lohsa, der Wirkungsstätte Zejlers. In der Hoyerswerdaer Stadtkirche wirkten bedeutende sorbische Pfarrer. Dies waren unter anderem:

Die im Weltkrieg nach Beschuss und Brand bis auf die Außenmauern und das Gewölbe schwer zerstörte Kirche wurde unter der Leitung des sorbischen Pfarrers Wilhelm Tschernik von 1952 bis 1957 wieder aufgebaut und Johannes dem Täufer geweiht. Seitdem trägt sie den Namen Johanneskirche. Tschernik initiierte im Jahre 1946 das erste Treffen sorbischer evangelischer Kirchengemeinden und 1947 den 1. Sorbischen evangelischen Kirchentag in Hoyerswerda.
Sorbische Gottesdienste hielten nun u.a. auch Superintendent Heinz Graefe und Pfarrer Richard Scholze.
Pfarrer Joachim Nagel (*27.06.1947) wirkte im Zeitraum 1992-2012 als Pfarrer in der Johanneskirchengemeinde. Er erlernte die sorbische Sprache und förderte die sorbischen Traditionen in der Stadt und auf den Dörfern. Er schlug einen jährlichen “Sorbischen Heimattag” vor und führte ihn 2007 erstmalig durch.
