Gründung und Entwicklung des Sorbischen Museums in Hoyerswerda
Museum für Geschichte und Volkskunde der Sorben auf dem Hoyerswerdaer Schloss Im August 1955 beschloss das Ministerium für Kultur der DDR “Maßnahmen zur Verbesserung des sorbischen Kulturlebens in den zweisprachigen Kreisen der Bezirke Dresden und Cottbus”. Im Punkt 5 war der Aufbau eines zentralen Museums zur sorbischen Geschichte festgelegt. Die Verantwortlichen einigten sich im Juni 1956 darauf, dass das zentrale Museum für sorbische Geschichte und Völkerkunde, das Sorbische Museum in Hoyerswerda einzurichten sei. Diese Entscheidung wurde mit dem Aufbau des Kombinates Schwarze Pumpe und der Vergrößerung der Stadt Hoyerswerda begründet. Angesichts der damit verbundenen Verringerung des sorbischen Bevölkerungsanteils könne das Sorbische Museum eine wertvolle Stütze der nationalen Minderheit sein, so argumentierte man. Es wurde sogar vorgeschlagen, weitere acht zentrale sorbische Institutionen in Hoyerswerda unterzubringen. Diese Vorschläge wurden aber bald wieder zurückgezogen. Und so war schlussendlich das Sorbische Museum die einzige zentrale sorbische Institution, welche in Hoyerswerda für eine bestimmte Zeit betrieben wurde.
Im Jahre 1957 genehmigte das Ministerium für Kultur die Vorbereitungsarbeiten für den Aufbau des Museums und ab 1. September diesen Jahres die hauptamtliche Stelle des Leiters des Sorbischen Museums. Die Trägerschaft übernahm der Rat der Stadt Hoyerswerda. Das 1952 ins Schloss umgesetzte Heimatmuseum Hoyerswerda stellte Räumlichkeiten für das Büro, das Archiv und die Bücherei des Sorbischen Museums zur Verfügung und arbeitete mit diesem zusammen. Im Jahre 1959 fanden Abstimmungen zum künftigen Standort des Museums statt. Als Sitz wurde die ehemalige Lessing-Oberschule favorisiert. In diesem Gebäude wurde ehemals das Gesellschaftshaus betrieben, in welchem 1912 die Domowina gegründet wurde. Das Haus war aber von der Berufsschule belegt und sollte erst ab 1965 zur Verfügung stehen. Es kam aber nie zum Einzug des Sorbischen Museums in dieses für die sorbische Geschichte so bedeutende Gebäude. Vom 1. September 1959 bis zum 31. Januar 1961 war die Stelle des Museumsleiters unbesetzt. Am Ende des Jahres 1960 beschloss der Rat der Stadt Hoyerswerda die Einstellung des Leiters des Sorbischen Museums. Ernst Schmidt (sorbisch: Arnošt Kowar) trat seine Stelle als Museumsleiter am 1. Februar 1961 an. Schon im Juli des gleichen Jahres erfuhr er, dass die staatlichen Instanzen mit der Domowina darüber verhandelten, die bisherigen Beschlüsse zum Sorbischen Museum wieder zu ändern. Man wollte es aus Konzentrations- und Einsparungsgründen von Hoyerswerda nach Bautzen verlegen. Es sollte aber zehn Jahre dauern, bevor eine endgültige Entscheidung fiel. Diese unklaren Zustände hemmten natürlich die Tätigkeit des Museums. Dazu kamen die ständigen Sorgen mit den Räumlichkeiten für die Magazine des Museums. Eigene Ausstellungsräume besaß das Sorbische Museum in Hoyerswerda von Anfang an nicht.
Museumsarbeit und Engagement unter Ernst Schmidt
Ungeachtet aller Schwierigkeiten leistete Ernst Schmidt eine fleißige Sammelarbeit, zum Beispiel auch in Groß Partwitz/Parcow, welches wegen der Braunkohle 1969/70 abgebaggert wurde. Er organisierte gemeinsam mit dem Heimatmuseum Hoyerswerda verschiedene Ausstellungen zu sorbischen Themen im Schloss. Diese waren immer gut besucht. Mit sorbischen Partnern gestaltete er Ausstellungen – insbesondere zur sorbischen Volkskunst und bildenden Kunst – im In- und Ausland. Schmidt hielt Vorträge in Schulen und Brigaden, in denen er über die sorbische museale Arbeit berichtete und zur Mitarbeit bei der Sammlung von Exponaten aufrief. Er unterstützte das Entstehen neuer musealer Ausstellungen, zum Beispiel in der Oberschule “Handrij Zejler” in Hoyerswerda/Wojerecy, in Rohne/Rowno und in Panschwitz-Kuckau/Pančicy Kukow. Er beriet bei volkskundlichen Aktivitäten. Im Jahre 1971 kulminierte die Auseinandersetzung darüber, ob das Sorbische Museum in Hoyerswerda verbleibt oder nach Bautzen übergeben wird. Auch eine durch Ernst Schmidt erarbeitete neue Konzeption für das Sorbische Museum im Schloss Hoyerswerda half nichts. Der Standort in Bautzen setzte sich durch. Und so beschloss der Rat der Stadt Hoyerswerda auf Verlangen der übergeordneten Gremien, das Sorbische Museum zum 1. Mai 1972 von Hoyerswerda nach Bautzen zu verlagern.
Der sorbische Missionsverein organisierte deutsch-sorbische Missionsfeste reihum in den Kirchgemeinden, so 1844 erstmals in Hoyerswerda, später zum Beispiel auch in Lohsa, der Wirkungsstätte Zejlers. In der Hoyerswerdaer Stadtkirche wirkten bedeutende sorbische Pfarrer. Dies waren unter anderem:
Zur Person von Ernst Schmidt (Arnošt Kowar)
Ernst Schmidt wurde am 13. September 1923 in Wuischke bei Weißenberg auf einem Kleinbauernhof geboren. Nach der Volksschule besuchte er 1938–41 die Handelsschule in Löbau. Die ersten Berufserfahrungen sammelte er in der Stadtverwaltung Weißenberg und im Landratsamt Löbau. Ehrenamtlich engagierte er sich als stellvertretender Vorsitzender der Domowina-Ortsgruppe Löbau. Sein sorbischer Berufsweg begann 1948 als Mitarbeiter des Sorbischen Kultur- und Volksbildungsamtes in Bautzen. Seit 1958 war er stellvertretender Leiter des Hauses für sorbische Volkskunst. Mit der Sammelaktion “My smy tak bohaći!” (Wir sind so reich!) trat er in die Museumswelt ein. 1961 wurde er Leiter des Sorbischen Museums und zog mit seiner Familie nach Hoyerswerda. Wegen der fehlenden eigenen Ausstellungsräume konzentrierte er sich auf die Sammeltätigkeit, die Registrierung und Lagerung der Exponate in mehreren Magazinen, die Organisierung und Unterstützung sorbischer Ausstellungen im In- und Ausland und auf die Öffentlichkeitsarbeit zu den sorbischen musealen Bemühungen. Immer wieder drückte er seine Unzufriedenheit über die seit 1961 andauernde Ungewissheit zur Zukunft seines Museums aus. 1966–1970 absolvierte er ein Fernstudium der Volkskunde an der Humboldt-Universität in Berlin mit dem Abschluss als Diplom-Ethnograf. Auch in Hoyerswerda wirkte er ehrenamtlich für die Domowina: ab 1961 führte er den Vorsitz der Domowina-Ortsgruppe Hoyerswerda-Neustadt, war Mitglied des Vorstandes des Domowina-Kreisverbandes “Handrij Zejler” Hoyerswerda und 1965/66 dessen Vorsitzender (župan). Im November 1971 organisierte er den Umzug des Sorbischen Museums von Hoyerswerda nach Bautzen, vorübergehend in den Neubau des Staatlichen Ensembles für sorbische Volkskultur. Seine Wohnung in Hoyerswerda behielt er jedoch. In Bautzen hatte das Museum nach weiteren Schwierigkeiten seit 1974 endlich auf der Ortenburg auch eigene Ausstellungsräume im ehemaligen Salzhaus. Schmidt eröffnete am 22. Mai 1976 die erste Dauerausstellung. Bis zum 30. Juni 1980 war er Museumsleiter. Danach arbeitete er bis zum Ruhestand (1989) als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter in der Abteilung Volkskunde des Instituts für sorbische Volksforschung und war einige Jahre auch Redakteur der Schriftenreihe des Sorbischen Instituts “Lětopis”. Schmidt/Kowar war auch Autor verschiedener Bücher und Artikel (194 Titel). Das bekannteste Buch in 10 Auflagen hat den Titel: “Sorbische bunte Ostereier”. Kowar beherrschte als einer von wenigen Sorben die sorbische Stenografie und veröffentlichte 1954 ein Lehrbuch dieser Kurzschrift. Er starb am 14. September 2014 in Hoyerswerda.
